From the 2005 NECH:
Most enclosures are intended to accommodate only those conductors that will be connected to terminals for switches or overcurrent devices within the enclosures themselves. Where adequate space is provided for additional conductors, such as control circuits, the total conductor fill in the enclosure may not exceed 40 percent of the cross section of the wiring space in the enclosure and no more than 75 percent if splices or taps are necessary.
Example
If an enclosure has a wiring space of 4 in. wide by 3 in. deep, the cross-sectional area is 12 in. 2 Thus, the total conductor fill (see Chapter 9, Table 5 for dimensions of conductors) at any cross section cannot exceed 4.8 in. 2 (40 percent of 12 in. 2), and the maximum space for conductors and splices or taps at any cross section cannot exceed 9 in. 2 (75 percent of 12 in. 2).
In general, the best way to avoid overcrowding enclosures is to use properly sized auxiliary gutters (366.22, 366.56, and 366.5 8 or junction boxes (314.16 and 314.2 8.
See 430.10 and commentary for wiring space in enclosures for motor controllers and disconnecting means.

Where did this come from?
Joe T…just try to remember these are Home Inspectors and not Electricians when you venture out to bash HI’s for things in other forums. Stay TRUE to NACHI, I have from the START !..while I have given the better part of 2 years TRYING to help…you will NEVER catch me berating ANY of them…Mr. Bushart included on another forum.
While Mr. Bushart does not know your real motives…this is a LONG running thing between us it seems as we TALKED about in OHIO…never the less…sorry you felt I am not qualified nor up to date on the NEC because of the use of Art. in a quick reference.
You will be HAPPY to know I spoke with someone WE both know about the subject …and is rather HIGH up on the electrical chain…and well…they did not think it was such a SIN to type Art…guess I am confused here…
it wont WIN with me fella…
I was going to be MEAN…but then again…I usually am…right?
Guys (Paul and Joe T),
I think the REAL problem is quoting electrical CODE at all. For instance, in NYC and Westchester, where Consolidated Edison is the AHJ, if you bond a gas ling, they turn the power and gas off to the dwelling. Additionally, Ny State is on an older version of the NEC.
So, what the challenge is, is to NOT simply quote code, whether the exact words are accurate or not, but to put those words into useable examples for us all to learn from.
Its the APPLICABILITY of these codes that we should be learning. It is far harder to teach the concept and meaning through real world examples, than simply quoting from a book.
Thanks Joe: I agree! Is the restriction you mention related to the interior metal piping which is “likely” to become energized, or to the underground gas piping, or too both?
If the underground restriction is considered, we can think of the connection on the pipe at the clamp, via the GEC as a “fuse” ready to explode if carrying a fault when it reaches the point of connection, which is often loose or corroded. I downloaded the ConEd manual and looked for the restriction but was not able to locate it, we could all benefit if you could help here and provide that information, please.
EXACTLY…Thank You !
Back to the question of “adequate size” and “fill”, but on a residential scale. I bought 22 cubic inch plastic boxes for my garage close-in, I think that is the largest generally available for residential use. I decide to make all 4 circuits 20 amp for flexibility and down the road, thus I bought only 12 guage wire to pull. So my question is how many 12-2 or 12-3 conductors does the chart say I can stuff into one of my boxes?
Paul;
Calm down. Joe just has to do it with ‘style’. He is the Carry Grant of Code. ![]()
We can’t help it that we are just clods.
Hope this helps, you old Hillbilly ![]()
I hear ya Will…he did not do it with STYLE however…style would have been to address something so PETTY with a civil reply if he really though I messed up something…I removed the petty thing…so trivial it was not even funny and for the record…had NOTHING to do with the lesson…and what i was trying to explain…but yet again…Joe is more like a Vulture waiting for a TYPO to POUNCE …kinda like the manner he did…anyway…thanks…yes he is the Gary Grant of CODE…6 feet under the last I heard;)
ALAS…I am done with the OLD FART…pounce on someone else…he does NOT want to get into an Electrical Debate with me…i wont let him get embarassed like that…
I respect my elders…
Let’s all just play nice.
The HI and the sparkys, lying peacful in the fields.
“And the Lion and the Lamb shall lay down together…”
Read that somewhere
Wow… I just joined here. Can someone tell me if Paul’s behavior is typical propriety on this board? Seems a little weird to me. If this is normal, please let me know. I’ll exit, stage right.
lol…no peace agreement on this one Will…we simply do not see Eye to Eye is all…
How about you READ some posts first before commenting…you do not know the history here. You are free to leave but you are also free to stay.
Nice. Now I’m being attacked. Nothing like a hearty ‘Welcome’! I did not deserve that. I so hoped I was joining a discussion among industry professionals.
attacked…heck no…I said if you read some of the posts you will find the history of what took place…lol…you are FREE to translate it how you wish…Oh…Welcome to the Board…are you a Home Inspector?
Please don’t let Paul and Joe scare you away. This board is not moderated and things can get pretty ugly sometimes, but overall it is the best HI MB there is bar none.
By the way welcome to the show.![]()
Very True…Ignore us Marc…it is really just a personal thing between me and JOE that sometimes plays out on the boards…not the norm… If you only knew the history…I am sure others will fill you in as you become more familar with NACHI.
Again…Welcome…excuse our MESS…
Joe welcomed me. Paul attacked me without merit. I am famaliar with Mr. Tedesco, as I have some books in my library with his name in the credits. He’s an old-timer in my industry, near as I can tell. I just ‘met’ Paul, ambush style, and it wasn’t fun.
Marc;
Wlecome to the members only section. Kind of like walking into a good bar fight. ![]()
You’ll get used to it.
But if you stick around, you just might learn something. More than just electrical.
Both Joe and Paul are certified geniuses and giants in the field.
Kind of like watching a bare knucked fist-fight between Einstein and Max Plank.
Messy, but very educational and entertaining.
