Hello Everyone, I’ve been reading this board for several months now and have really enjoyed the information and discussions. I’m doing my four inspections for the membership and yesterday I had an attic that had the foil stapled on the rafters in the attic which left the air gap for ventilation from the soffits to the ridge vent. I guess it’s the stuff that reflects the heat to keep the attic cool. The original asphalt shingles were replaced after 10 years and the decking was wavy and felt a little spungy when walked. Could this stuff (not sure what to call it) be causing the premature failure of the shingles and decking? I would have pics but this home had so many issues I filled up my camera card. I’m going to try and go back to take more pics and will attempt to post them. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

What you’re looking at is a Radiant Barrier, designed to reflect heat out of the attic. Some shingle manufacturers void their warranty when these are installed. As long as the ventilation is properly run, there should be no issue on these installations with tile or metal roofs.
