when there is rust all over but not eating through the gas pipe in the furnace area when you take the cover off , is this condensation dripping from somewhere?

The rust you describe sounds like what I see on furnace cleanings. Furnaces with cracked or rusted heat exchangers and natural draft furnaces with restricted venting allow some of the moist combustion gases to spill back out into the controls area. Do you see any streaking on the left and right sides of the burner cover? Another good sign that something is starting to go wrong.
