How to Perform Wind Mitigations

The Article I Read was Wind Mitigation. This article much like the class goes over the important aspect of why it is important to see how a home is effected. Most of the time wind mitigation inspections are done to lower insurance costs. in 20006 Citizens insurance raised their premiums 45% due to wind insurance.

This is the garage door, examined and found that it is rated for a designated wind pressure of 25 PSF and tested to 37.5 PEF, also has a removable wind load post for wind speed in excess of 75 mph.

Learned about truss and connections used. It is important to use the proper connectors and the correct type of screw consistently throughout the framing, if compromised, can cause problems. Also improper alterations can compromise the load bearing capacity. Any alterations should be done by an engineer.

Roof to wall strapping is an attachment device used to secure a structural wall to a truss bottom cord. The strap is an integral component in preventing roof uplift, and holding the roof structure in place particularly during high wind events. The strap should be secured to the tie beam no more than one half inch away from the truss. If the strap does not wrap over the truss, it must be attached to the truss with at least three nails.

When inspecting a roof with a chimney a main area of concern is the back side of the chimney wall at the roof slop. A cricket or saddle should be installed at this roof location, especially if the chimney is greater than 30 inches wide. The Cricket or saddle which can be made of sheet metal or framing of the same material as the roof covering is installed to shed water away from the chimney wall preventing potential leaks at the roof and chimney connection.

This is an exterior west elevation of the subject property. The roof is a low pitch roof (under 4-12 pitch). The 2 windows in the photo are original to the house and have no opening protection and are not impact rated.

A Garage Inspection.
I learned that deck screws are designed to resist withdrawal and metal connecterssuch asjoist hangers are designed to resist shear.
I also realized that even though people or contractors may know that a structural engineer needs to approve changes, they may still not consult with one.

Wind Mitigation article. I was unaware of the possible $20,000 dollar detectable for wind damage. This information helps me feel even better about the service we are providing. Not only are we trying ensure that the home is safe, If week can prove proper mitigation technics, the home owners can save a lot of money on the premiums as well as out of pocket expenses in the event of a disaster.

I have included a photo of a metal door attached to a metal frame. I did not see any codes, labels, or serial numbers on the door. More information will be needed to determine the impact rating. Although it appears to be strong, I have no proof.

The garage door at this location has a label stating that it will meet or exceed the ANSI/DASMA 108 or ATSM E33-02 criteria. It also has horizontal bracing on each panel. This door meets or exceeds the D rating. Possible an A rating with some more research.

Wind mitigation benefits homeowners, private insurers, and all levels of government. Gulf coast states are more prone to hurricane damage. Deductibles can be upwards of $20,000. Garage doors are a common point of failure due to inadequate track strength and mounting systems. Hip roofs receive 40% less pressure than Gable roof types. Wind mitigation is designed to limit the amount of wind damage to the structure by employing preventative measures.

Hi, just introducing myself to the forum. Thanks. A. J. Brown.

This is an example of a roof-to-wall attachment. This particular component is a single wrap and if all other visible attachments are like this one and it has at least one nail on the opposing side, #4 on the standard wind mitigation form would be marked “C”.

I read “Doing Damage During An Inspection: It’s Your Job”.

It is our job to test all accessible components of the home. What someone may call breaking it, as an inspector is testing it and finding defects. We should not feel bad for finding these defects because this is inspecting the home in its current state at the truest form.

This picture shows a MDC NOA approval code for an aluminum single hung window. Upon verification from the MDC product control website shows that this window is verified wind pressure/cyclical load only (not impact resistant). However, the exterior has MDC product approved shutters; therefore, A1 would be marked on the 1802 form.

As related to this course, I read “Wind Mitigation”. Wind mitigation is important in any state that experiences strong wind events, specifically along the gulf coasts states which are first to experience hurricane force winds. WM helps all parties involved, and as a result (in FL anyways), homeowners will get a discount for taking WM efforts set forth by FBC and MDC NOA, including such building practices for the roof covering, roof to wall attachment, protection of door and window openings, newer garage doors, and roof geometry.

Hello, this is my essay on the photo that I downloaded. This shows the rear of the home with two gables. This would be marked as a non-hip roof on the form if this was more than 10% of the total roof geometry. Thanks, A. J. Brown.

Hello, this is my essay on the article entitled “Wind mitigation”. The article discusses using wind mitigation techniques that are approved by the Florida building codes and the Miami/Dade “high velocity hurricane zone”. these wind mitigation techniques can allow homeowners to receive discounts on their mortgage windstorm insurance policies. Thanks, A. J. Brown.

Report on the article Wind Mitigation from the library if inspections. Article talks about what insurance companys will give a discount on for example. Hip roofs can have 40% less pressure on them during a wind storm so a hip is going to give a better discount. Roof attachments are more important than how thick the sheathing is and how many attachments it’s has per the sheathing will provide a better discount also.
