wooden entrance door with glazed openings. The photo shows that there is no evidence on the installation wall of any type of Windborne Debris Protection. This constitutes a point of weakness that prevents the obtaining of credits for insurance purposes.
wind speed
In areas of high hurricane risk, the gradient of wind speed as a function of height is very important to consider. The construction of the roofs must consider this factor so that they can withstand the pressures to which they are subjected.
The aluminum framed exterior sliding glass door appears to be original to when the home was constructed in 1970. The single pane glass and frame do not comply with any impact resistance codes, for the opening to be compliant either the door would have to be replaced with a new rated door or an approved shutter system would have to be installed.
In order to verify that a window is code compliant for wind mitigation credits the inspector should start by examining the glass pane to see if it is laminated glass and then review the frame to see if there is a Florida Product or Miami Dade approval sticker.
This is a garage door being check to see if it is hurricane resistant from just looking at it it seems to not be if you look at the cross beams on it they seem to thin and it only has 5 anchors on each side of the door
I did not know that there are many different types of mortar joints as I have found on here there is many to pick from but I am still learning about them and which ones are better than others ones
The roof surface of this home was significantly deteriorated and appeared to be at or beyond its service life as evidenced by multiple shingles being lifted/blown off after a recent storm that high winds. Some structural repairs are often needed after old roof surfaces are removed and the structure becomes fully visible. Related roofing components such as flashing and vents should be replaced or installed as needed and per standard building practices.
The article I chose to study was “Mastering Roof Inspections: Asphalt Composition Shingles, Part 1”. I found the information on best practices related to shingle manufacture and installation, including the different types of shingles and their performance characteristics, and their related components, such as underlayment, flashing and fasteners very interesting.
THE PICTURE SHOWS GLASS WINDOWS PROTECTED WITH IMPACT RATED ACCORDIONS SHUTTERS. THE INSPECTOR SHOULD LOOK FOR A LABEL OR STAMP IN THE SHUTTERS TO VERIFIES IF THEY MEET THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DESIGNATED ZONES. THE HOMEOWNER MAY PROVIDE ANY PAPERWORK TO CONFIRM THE RATING.
In addition to the direct effect of high winds on buildings, hurricane generate airborne debris than can affect the structures. It is very important for buildings in high wind region to be consider having a home inspector or a structural engineer check its structural system.
although there are some parts of this home that is hip roof, the side are not and when calculating the total measurement of the home divided by the non hip roof sections the outcome is greater then 10% of the home.
reading h-clips for inspectors: seems that they should be looked for and noted on the inspection report but not listed as a defect unless known somehow by the inspector that h-clips are a mandatory part of the design. h clips may reduc cost among builders.
I don’t have access to the attic in my condo to confirm the roof decking is 1/2" 8d nail spacing clips single double strap on trusses. These units do have impact rated windows and doors from a 2005 remodel but the old barrel tile roof is not in the best shape these days
Various types of rubber-like materials are also used as underlayment and are generally referred to as rubberized asphalt. These typically have adhesive on one side, which is protected by a peel-off membrane, making them self-adhering. The rubber-like qualities of these underlayments make them self-sealing, meaning that they seal well around fasteners, such as staples and nails.

in this course we learned how to perform and prepare a report for wind mitigation in Florida. the different style roofs and the necessary hardware to secure the roof in a hurricane. to include widow coverings and how they operate

In the picture above I have Located a truss to scan for the nail pattern spacing for the 8d nails used during construction.
Spacing: 6/12 means 6 inches on the panel ends and 12 inches in the central portion of the panel.
Trusses cannot be altered in any way without the approval of a structural engineer. When you see plywood gussets added at truss connections like these triangular gussets, then an alteration of some sort has obviously been made and you have to recommend evaluation by a structural engineer. So, that condition went into the report.
This essay is about determining if the roofs hip style or not. If the roof is determined to be hip style then the home owner will get a big discount on home owners insurance. First you have to measure the perimeter of the roof. Then measure any non-hop stye sections. Divide the non-hip measurement by the hip measurement. If its less then 10% then the roof is hip.
