I agree with you that the bearing point of the beam is not the most respective place to put a penetration, a structural engineer could elaborate on this more than we can, because we are inspectors not engineers. That is why they make the big bucks. ha. ha. I can of re-call saying the same thing to my family Doctor. ha. ha.

In any case, any penetrations through a support beam should be questioned, and written up as appropriate. Things like these should be left up to the professionals in the particular design.
