"Inspecting Portable Fire Extinguishers" online video course

This fire extinguisher is not one I would recommended to use if you are doing a home inspection and some thing where to happen, like if you left on the oven. I would look for a newer fire extinguisher. I had one on my house gowning up. They look really cool but not to use.

Fire extinguishers look really cool and fun to spry in a friend or family member. but I recommended that would not be a good idea! they can really hurt some one. when I was in college my friend sprayed another friend and it burned his neck. I LOL’ed and it was funny… so if someone is going to get sprayed make sure that you do the spraying and not be sprayed on!

The photo is a Class “A” rating extinguisher that is effective against fires involving paper, wood, textiles and plastics. The primary chemical used to fight these fires is mono-ammonium phosphate because of its ability to smother fires in these types of materials. This class of extinguisher can normally be found in homes and or business like school, libraries, and or office buildings.

Many people don’t know of cost effective ways to cool their homes. With energy prices rising and the race for renewable energy remaining steady, energy consumption is of great importance. Something as simple as using ceilings to help cool your home can improve your energy efficiency tremendously. Also, owning a thermostat that can be programmed to turn on when you need it most may also in energy consumption.

Carbon Dioxide extinguishers are good against flammable liquids or gases. The discharge comes out very cold cuts off the oxygen supply and lowers the temperature of fire source. Not very good for fires with wood, paper or fabrics which may smolder and reignite.

Rockwool insulation is the best conventional insulation in the market place due to it being fire proof with a melting point above 2000 degrees F.Being non-combustible it does not promote the spread of flames or toxic smoke. Know as Roxul.

I would clean the entire surface of the fire extinguisher from top to bottom. then I would see if there were any damages to the tank. I then would see if the hose was in good shape. I would check to see if it had been properly checked on its tag.

Fire extinggushers could be a life saver if a person is put in the wrong situation. Most commercial then residential occupancies will have an fire extinguisher present. Fire extinguishers are required to have maintence at least once a month. Safety plays a part in everything.

The NFPA has a instruction book to help owners and agents to keep order. The 6 year maintence and 12 year hydrostatic tests are all put in place so, when a person goes to use it in an emergency situation all is good. There is a 5 year maintence required if it is an CO2 extinguisher. Portable 1 test are approved by AHS. To perform an 30 day inspection a certification is not required. Which makes being safe; easier.

Here is a picture of a fire extinguisher in my personal home. This is something that really goes unnoticed. It was tucked away in a cabinet and after looking it over it is actually out of date. I have never used a fire extinguisher before. I am going to take this opportunity to practice using this one and replace it with a new unit. Unfortunately we take many of these safety items for granted and don’t maintain items like we should.

I read an article titled Fire Extinguisher Maintenance and Inspection. Most of the article did fall in line with the video. One item that I found particularly interesting and that I did not know is that there is a type K fire extinguisher that is good for kitchens. It would be good for homeowners to have different types in different areas of the home.

Pictured is a rusted fire extinguisher. Rusted fire extinguishers are dangerous to have in the home as they can explode under duress. We recommend replacing unit with a new unit and annual review of the unit by a qualified contractor to verify func

I just completed watching the video course “Inspecting Portable Fire Extinguishers” and was really amazed at all the inspect able components of a portable fire extinguisher. I would say that the little plastic tie for the pin would be one of the more important items to look for when inspecting a portable fire extinguisher. If this plastic tie is missing then one could assume that it has been tampered with not full. This is something I will be definitely be looking for.

I just read an article on aging in place. I found this very interesting as we and every house will do just that - age. I will try and take some of this information and incorporate it in my inspections as well as report writing.

This commercial extinguisher was located in my fire station and was in good condition and the tag was current. There were no obvious damage. The unit was placed in the proper location but it had a fan placed in front of it.

The article “Fire Extinguisher Maintenance and Inspection” points out that portable fire extinguishers are used to prevent the spread of fire. They should be located in an area with easy access to all employees. It is very important that all fire extinguishers in the building are put on a regular maintenance program to insure that they will operate properly if needed.

The photo of this pellet stove insert was taken to point out the broken glass on the front left side. The broken glass is a health and fire hazard and needs to be replaced immediately. Besides being a fire hazard, carbon monoxide gas can escape through the broken glass pane. Sitting next to the right side of the pellet stove was a small canister fire extinguisher that had just been purchased and was ready for use if needed.

After inspecting the fire extinguisher, there was no visual indication of any physical damage. The pressure gauge was in the green and the lable was perfectly intact and legible. There was not a hose to inspect but the metal spout had no damage. The safety tie that holds the pin in place had been removed and needs replaced.
