Fire Extinguisher Inspection: I couldn’t take any pictures of a fire extinguisher being that I don’t have one in my house. I found this picture off google. I wanted to find a picture that was properly tagged as well to show the importance of documentation of inspection on monthly fire extinguisher checks.

Such as making sure the extinguisher is no more than 75 feet away from any living space and the access to a fire extinguisher is not obstructed.

While I don’t have an image of a residential fire extinguisher, I do have this. This is an image of an extinguisher bay taken during a fire truck inspection a few years back. What we checked for was monthly inspection records, Tags properly attached and filled out, secure mounting, proper pressure gauge readings, yearly recertifications, safety pin condition, operating lever condition, discharge head condition and tightness, overall tank condition, hose condition, hose restrictions and if the hose was tightly threaded and the nozzle fastened to the tank.

I was reading the article “OSHA Announces New Safety Guidelines for Commercial Roof Inspections” and found myself wondering how this slipped by me being a co-owner of an NDI company. We perform inspections while standing on ladders, catwalks, scaffolding and various precarious platforms. It immediately prompted me to download the requirements and email them to our Safety officer to make sure we are still in compliance with industrial standards. Once again, I am reminded that no matter what industry inspections are performed, they are very similar in their basic nature in both safety and performance.

I chose the article on fire extinguisher and maintenance due to extinguisher chart identifying extinguisher types and what fires to use on. I feel this chart is very important to prevent the spread of a fire. I would include this chart in every home inspection and suggest the homeowner keep it somewhere handy in case of emergency

The picture attached shows a fire extinguisher in very bad shape.
Just to mention some fails, are:

  • The extinguisher body is all dented and crooked
  • The handle is not attached
  • The plate with instructions is not legible
  • There is no valve that shows fill condition

I read the article named “Fire Extinguisher Maintenance and Inspection” and there i a part that wasn’t mentioned in the previous video, and is the fire type.
There are 5 different types of extinguishers, type A, B, C, D and K, according on the source of the fire.
It is a very important fact to know, because according to the fire type, we can select the type of extinguisher to use in case of emergency.

fire extinguishers come in 4 types that are labeled alphabetically. it is crucial to know the four types and what they are used for. if you use the wrong fire extinguisher to fight a fire that it is not designed for you can have problems that you didnt want.

This fire extinguisher appears to be in good condition. The gauge shows the pressure and the green. It has a safety tag on it to document how often it has been inspected and with instructions on how to properly use the fire extinguisher.

An old fire extinguisher that is missing the instructions would be hard for someone with no training to use. The fire extinguisher should be in an accessible location or anyone could grab it in case of an emergency quickly read the instructions and use it.

Depends on The 2010 version of NFPA 10 in paragraph 7.1 states, the owner or his agent is responsible for inspecting and maintaining the portable fire extinguishers. Persons performing maintenance and recharge shall be certified. Certification requires passing a test administered by an organization acceptable to the AHJ. The extinguisher would be in good condition anytime, and I think it is a great idea. We do not have to check extinguishers before using it , and could save time to put fire out!
