It explains what type of fire extinguisher to use for specific combustibles, as well as what to look for as far as labeling and defects while doing a general inspection.

This is a picture of a metal inspection tag. This tag has a place for the inspectors initials for each month for four years. This allows the inspector to inspect and to keep a record to be sure that the extinguisher is inspected each month as required.

I read an article on fire extinguisher maintenance. The NFPA Recommends that all fire extinguishers should be hydrostatically tested every 5 to 12 years depending on the type. The ones that fail should be destroyed and replaced with a new one. This is in addition to the monthly visual inspection that is required.
