New Sketch for Reports: Foundation Anchor Bolts

A new sketch was added to InterNACHI’s Inspection Image Gallery. Members may download the sketch and use it for their inspection reports.

  • The bolts must be at least 1/2-inch diameter (12.7 mm).
  • Approved anchors or anchor straps can be installed and spaced as required to provide equivalent anchorage to 1/2-inch-diameter (12.7 mm) anchor bolts.
  • The bolts must not be spaced greater than 6 feet (1829 mm) on center.
  • Bolts must extend into the concrete or grouted cells of concrete masonry units (concrete blocks) at least 7 inches (178 mm).
  • The bolts must be located in the middle third of the plate width. It is common to see an anchor bolt placed near the edge of a wood sole plate. The requirement for placement of a bolt within the middle third of the wood plate width allows some flexibility while providing for a minimum edge distance.
  • A nut and washer must be tightened on each anchor bolt. No loose nuts. No missing nut. No missing washer.
  • There must be at least two bolts per plate section.
  • The bolt must be located at least 12 inches (305 mm) from the end of the plate section.
  • The bolt must be located at least seven bolt diameters from the end of the plate section. It’s a common defect to see a bolt placed near the end of a plate section.

This information and the new sketch was recently added to 25 Standards Every Inspector Should Know Course - InterNACHI®. Check it out.

The threaded bolt, washer, and nut should also be galvanized.
