Overhead Service Drop Near Balcony

Putting aside what is ‘right’ lets look at the reality.

I can only go by my area, but before the POCO can hook up the electrical inspection must be done and the inspector tells the POCO to go ahead.

One must assume this was inspected and approved or there would be no power in the house.

Yes I think this is a safety hazard and yes I know how to work with the POCO, and yes I would, if I was at this house doing other work bring up the options to fix this.

That said I stand by my statement that the electrical inspectors hands are tied.

Do you have a law or code rule in mind that would allow the electrical inspector the authority to have this changed?

Actually, this was a temporary drop for a new build.

Jeff,

Still scratching my head over this statement.

That does not look like a new building. Do you mean they tapped off the service to this building to run to a new building?

Nope, brand new custom build. The service drop comes off a 4X4 post attached to a power pole in the rear alley. It actually runs directly over the pool. You can't see it in this picture ![icon_confused.gif](upload://qv5zppiN69qCk2Y6JzaFYhrff8S.gif)

But you can see it here.

I started doing the draw inspections for this project just after demo of the previous home was complete.

Final inspection was Thursday

Jerry…the 10’ measurement…is it for where the service attaches to the house (as you pointed too http://www.nachi.org/bbsystem/usrimages/more/electric_OH_clearances_balcony_porch.jpg) or is it from the LOWEST POINT like the bottom of the drip loop in the photo…really need to know…not questioning your knowledge.

Harvey,

That drawing on the photo was not point to the drip loop (didn't make it that high either), but to the upper drawn line.

10 feet from the porch, balcony, deck, walkway, etc., surface to the bottom of the lowest point of the over head service drop over that surface (typically, that is the drip loop).

Granted, I should have made the 10 feet on the drawing taller, but I put one on there, then decided there was room for two more (of the 10 ft marks), but not enough room for a third (two were too short, three too high). Just sloppy drawing on my part trying to hurry the photo so I could add it to my post before too many people read the post without the drawing there.

Jeff,

"Final inspection was Thursday."

Are you saying your final draw inspection was Thursday, or the buildings Final Inspection was Thursday.

Both leave me puzzled because it is does not look ready for either.

Final draw inspection. . .

All that is left is a bit of clean up, attachment of the main service drop and installation of the meter.

Jerry,

I am asking for the sake of education. I did not mean to criticize your "mark-up".

So, is it "from the lowest point", or are drip loops excluded?

I realized that, I explained the reason for the way it was.

What about the overhead clearance for pools?

18' min. from the water surface.

Note that there are other clearances (NEC) that might make this higher.

We were discussing clearances over "walking surfaces" (balconies, decks, walkways, porches, etc.).

I've heard of walking on water, but water is not considered a "walking surface".

'Course, once it freezes over ...

I was responding to a picture provided by Jeff.

The clearance did not look adequate.

I went back to the site in Marbelhead, MA where I took the picture last year, and I found a new underground service and no more overhead service drop.

Case closed?
