Hi to all,

the following weeks questions are all going to be based on the results from the beta test version of the new exam that we are developing. in going through the beta test answers there were some areas that I was surprized people were getting wrong.

Regards

Gerry

You might want to change the title of the diagram to "Correct Polarity".

This, reversed polarity, is an extremely dangerous condition.

Example: You want to change the broken light bulb in your properly wired ceiling light. But because this fixture is 'fed' from a receptacle ,via the switch, whose polarity is reversed, the outside of the bulb socket is 'hot' and could shock you if you were to try to remove the damaged bulb base. Even if the switch were turned off.

Gerry…

As I've been using a Suretest, pretty much exclusively, for "grounded" outlets for the last year and a half, and, as I understand that the light sequence isn't the same on all brands of testers, and, as I don't have and don't need those memorized, I have to question this question!

Hi Richard,

Not to be questioning your question about my question whatsoever, but what any given manufacturers tester shows in the way of lights is a bit irrelevent, the real issue here is that the hot wire goes to the narrow slot, the white goes to the wide slot and the ground goes to the round pin.

I hope my answer, of your queery of my answer, answers your question ![icon_wink.gif](upload://ssT9V5t45yjlgXqiFRXL04eXtqw.gif)

I think

Another 'suggestion'.

Can everyone start calling the grounds (what they call them) the bare wires?

I am not trying to make this technical just clearer.

Hi to all,

Heck Mike, I have only just learned to call them "grounding conductors" and you want me to change again, I used to call them the Bare copper thingymajigs, I thought I was improving ![icon_lol.gif](upload://zEgbBCXRskkCTwEux7Bi20ZySza.gif) ![icon_lol.gif](upload://zEgbBCXRskkCTwEux7Bi20ZySza.gif) ![icon_lol.gif](upload://zEgbBCXRskkCTwEux7Bi20ZySza.gif) ![icon_lol.gif](upload://zEgbBCXRskkCTwEux7Bi20ZySza.gif)

Let us try this:

In a residential application we will call these conductors as follows.

Black - ungrounded

Red - ungrounded

White - grounded (unless re-identified)

Bare - equipment grounds.

Gerry...Sorry...just one more Senior Moment.

You were right to question my question about your question as my question was questionable at best.

Please ignore my previous post.

Hi Richard,

You are forgiven, it is only to be expected at your age ![icon_wink.gif](upload://ssT9V5t45yjlgXqiFRXL04eXtqw.gif) ![icon_wink.gif](upload://ssT9V5t45yjlgXqiFRXL04eXtqw.gif)

I am glad that your question about my answer, was answered, and while your question about my question was in fact questionable, I would hate to be thought of as unanswerable.

Regards

Gerry
