Hi to all,

today we will start a week of chimney and fireplace questions, as this appears to be a weak area for alot of members and guests.

You mean that there is a hearth required?

Wow, I’m surprised at the number of incorrect answers to this one icon_eek.gif

Gerry caught a few on that one

Doors aren't required by IRC, although with a blocked open damper it will allow for a serious downdraft in the winter time, or a lot of wasted energy going up the chimney

Control valve is req'd, but at 6 ft or less

Did I miss something Gerry. Oh yeah, a requirement for a not required item is not required or a requirement. ![eusa_eh.gif](upload://ro9kPBBU7ILOA34tTsGzSg7Sl8y.gif)

Sneaky question

Hi to all,

Paul managed to see his way past a few of my little "blind alleys"

Kevin, codes make no distinction between what the fireplace is powered with, therefore all fireplaces should have a hearth.

Jeff, I agree with you about the wrong answers on this question, but I have seen from the new exam that fireplaces and chimneys is a weak area relatively speaking, I am also shocked as all the answers are in codecheck, which is the minimum level of knowledge that inspectors should have.

Regards

Gerry

Actually it does…

Fireplace with Gas appliance and Fireplaces....two distint and seperate areas of the code book.

And I believe it has good reason...a hearth protects from jumping embers...which would not be an issue with a gas fireplace.

Just my take on it. ![icon_smile.gif](upload://b6iczyK1ETUUqRUc4PAkX83GF2O.gif)

Hi Kevin,

I can't fault your logic on this one, but I have been all through IRC and can't prove your right, maybe there is something in UMC that covers it, but I don't have the full text of that one.

maybe one of our code guys has a take on it.

regards

Gerry

Typically, if it’s a “gas only” appliance, the front glass is sealed and there is no requirement for the hearth extension.

Dual functioning fireplaces (gas and/or solid) require the proper hearth. If I can open the doors, I expect to see a protected area in front of it.

My nickel

(forgetting about the semantics of something that is not needed being called a "requirement" ... must be a British thing ... LOL) ... ![icon_wink.gif](upload://ssT9V5t45yjlgXqiFRXL04eXtqw.gif)
