Joe…

I bought my first one online after a little research for low price, but then when it quit working, I decided I needed an immediate replacement and would then have a backup.

So...I went down to my local electrical contractor supply store and found that they carried the Suretest line. I paid LESS there (+ tax) than the online store! The huge added benefit is that I've since had problems with that one (LCD screen "leaked"), and the supply store replaced it on the spot, no questions asked.

If you are anywhere near a large enough city, you might try that route.

What's that?

I use the 61-155 with GFCI and AFCI testers. I carry a spare in the truck along with several extra cords. . .

![](upload://5CQpVF5E8FTGenrpSUyxHClzu7s.jpeg)

The back light has gone out on this one that is about two years old. The ground pin on the cord seems to wear out and either fall off or make poor contact after a period of time.

You'll know it's time for a new cord when you get consistent "no ground" readings

DK is an Arc-Fault tester ($340)

C505-0058DK is lower priced tester for AFCI, GFCI, etc. ($180)

C505-0164DK is probably the most universal for the HI needs. ($260)

These prices are from the PROF EQUIP Catalog, you can do better

at your local electrical supply store.

Jeff,

Ideal will replace for free the 61-155. The pin problem is a design flaw, I called them up and they said send it to us. A short time later I got a brand new unit. It has a lifetime warranty. 1-800-435-0705 or

I just did a search and that is the one I use.

Quote:
Item #: C505-0165DK
Manufacturer: IDEAL Industries
Manufacturer Item #: 61-165
Product Type: Circuit Tester and Arc Fault Analyzer

That's why I have two Doug. I've returned them both at different times, but I can't bear the thought of not having one for two weeks.

I found a place that sells the cords for $9. I ordered three ![icon_biggrin.gif](upload://iKNGSw3qcRIEmXySa8gItY6Gczg.gif)

Jeff,

Same here, I have two or more of most everything I use routinely. I won’t even tell you how many cameras I have. But I wear them out so they pay their own way many times over.

Jae,
I bought a 61-056 at Home Depot for about $147.00 so you can beat the online prices if you look around

Dave Bush used to buy them in bulk and sell them to memebers for NACHI…not sure if he still does that or not…I think I paid $220 for mine.

The -165 is supposed to no longer give you the false readings near the panel, if i understand correctly.

I had the 155, and the plug pins were just soldered dirdctly to the board. They broke, after awhile, from stress.

Went to an electrical supply store and bought a 165. They took the old 155 and said that they would send it back to Ideal and have them send me a fixed or new one.

165 has much more features and will properly test the new Siemens panels and AFCI breakers.

You always get a false ground condition if you test an outlet within about 15 feet of the panel, where the ground and neutral are bonded.

Hope this helps.

One more question, if you don’t mind. What “Adaptors” might I need if I buy the 61-165? I got hte following items from the NACHI Tools website, but there is no description of what these adaptors do.

Thanks for your reply.

61-175 Ground Continuity Adapter - Adds $15.00
61-176 Isolated Ground Adapter - Adds $15.00
61-183 Alligator Clip Adapter - Adds $30.00

Joe,

I think most of us just use it by directly plugging it in to the receptacle...and don't use anything other than the 1' cord it comes with.

A spare cord is a good idea though as they tend to go bad (usually registering no-ground) after a while.
