It is no different than having a receptacle over a sink counter next to the tub IMHO.

Since this is not a shower and the area is not subject to spray, I fail to see a safety real hazard.

It would be stupid to put any line powered device on that shelf as it is an accident waiting to happen even though the GFCI would prevent serious injury.

AGREED!

But even the seatbelt, air bags, antilock brakes and traction control in my truck may not help if I am an idiot :p. The fact that the GFCI receptacle, extension cord, TV and appliances etc. are now all made in China is not reassuring either!

My statement:
In my opinion the outlet should be removed as a safety precaution. The close proximity to the tub could lead to a possible electrocution.

Wayne, just being a Devil’s advocate:

If an outlet was outside the tub area laterally by 1’ and 36" above the floor, would you be concerned? (If so, at what point laterally would you be satisfied?)

Now, if you are not concerned with it 36" high on a wall just outside the tub tiled surface area, why is the one way up on the wall above the tub more of a concern to you?

There is no right or wrong answer. Just stuff to think about.
