Their opinions should have some basis of established standards otherwise the revelancy is of limited value. For example, i have seen furniture showrooms with thermostat cables run for the receptacles for numerous lamps. Using the Ohio definition, this is not a an issue since it didn’t start a fire in the 5 minutes, but this is not anywhere close to established standards. From which perspective do you report? Obviously one is of no use to the buyer.

Code is the minimum acceptable standard a building can be constructed to.

Exactly why you shouldn’t use it. Isn’t your experience far greater than the minimum? The code is for new construction. Existing structures require a different set of considerations.

People hire you because you can inform them of the present condition of a structure. That’s a big responsibility, so why worry about code?
