There has been a little confusion about this. Mike.
I took information from a number of places in creating the library, sources included:
- the International Residential Code (IRC);
- technical data sheets and systems specifications from various manufacturer’s associations;
- installation manuals for a variety of building products and various building science-related sites.;
- Message board subjects;
- Existing lists of narratives including one put together about 5 years ago by a group of inspectors that included Russel Ray and myself.
It’s mostly this last item that is confusing people. Although I used some of those narratives as prompts, a lot of them were not very good, the language was not uniform, and they did not fit the format that I use. Any narratives I used as guidelines, I re-wrote so that the language was uniform, and so they fit the formula:
- Identification of the condition
- Description of how serious the problem is or why it is a problem
- A recommendation
The narratives are all my original writing, not a compilation of other people’s work. As when writing anything, I did research before doing the writing.

Also, Kenton’s narrative library exceeds 8,000 in number.
I understand Mike. There’s been some confusion about these, but the answer is that I wrote them all.
Kenton your table of contents is impressive all by itself.
Took me years just to create my own so certainly it would help anyone that needs to start fresh or add to what they have.
Troy, how did you achieve spacing? I wanted to make one line spacing and hold the “ENTER” key for about ten minutes but the narrative did not go to the next line.
You need to ad a note with a period then hit enter.
This will only make a space in the report. I want to see spaces in the narratives. To be clear I want to see spaces between notes.
Yuri, add a new narrative with no text in it (some people add a . but it’s not needed). Then move the blank narrative (currently at the end of your list) where you want it.
