Another day, another deck

it wouldnt fly with the local building department here, but I would have no problem with it if it were mine…used to do them like that all the time…

The only thing I see is that the stringers could be supported better at the ground level. It looks like it is attached to the foundation, and it looks like it is free standing supported by posts. 4X4s at that deck height would be fine where I am. Bite me.

not anymore…

Here’s a graphic I use in my reports for this condition when I see it. And here is the note I include with the picture…

“Possible structural bracket that can be used for side-mounted beams (for new construction or for repair of existing construction). This bracket has a load limit that must not be exceeded, consult with a structural engineer before use.”

Shoulda been there a long time ago, or you just didn’t bother looking for it being there.
I post this link all the time for over 15 years now!!

Do they allow side attachment in your area?

If your prescribing repairs, that is one option I suppose.

One of the reasons for new requirements is that wood is changing. Rings are wider and the wood is softer. Adjustments have been integrated into new deck requirements.

My area is way too big to keep track of who allows what, lol. As a rural area inspector, I can be in five different towns on five different days easily. I call out side mounted anytime I see it and the first question I get is what’s the best way to address it. So I give them this option with the CYA of stating to consult an engineer before use. It feels like good middle ground to me.

I cover 16 counties. What does state code say? If there is no local inspector… You accept and prescribe? Just saying.

Someone took the time to orient the deck board’s bark side out.

Five nails and one GRK lag bolt. Try pulling it apart.
