A tracer wire runs beside the gas line. When service is needed a signal is impressed on the tracer wire and a receiver can then trace the exact position of the line. Similar to Fox and Hound for tracing circuits in the house.

I agree too, a tracer wire for the buried gas line. I’m having a new driveway installed at my house and the gas co. came out last week to mark the buried gas line. They did so by connecting a tone device to the wire as shown in the photo and then “read” the location with a probe.

I used to excavate soil for foundation and perimeter drainage weep tiles repairs and talked to utility companies. Typically the tracer wire is bonded to NG pipes in my neck of the woods.
