can anyone help me determine whether these are asbestos cement or fiber cement shingles? the home was built in 1971. is there a way to tell just by looking at them? or do they need to be tested?

Most likely ACM siding shingles due to age. But without testing, they are “possible” ACM.
Yep, that is asbestos /cement. The fiber cement are more brittle. Worked with those a lot.
