If these shingles do contain asbestos, I seem to remember that abatement usually isn’t performed.
Since the shingles seem to be in relatively good condition considering their age, and due to the fact that they are outside and not in an enclosed air space, I've been told that remediation isn't necessary.

Paul Hinsberger hit the nail on the head. FIBER CEMENT. It is not our job to do environmental testing, and as such I report them only as fiber cement, with a notation that asbestos is often associated with them.

I wouldn’t get too worried about it from a safety standpoint. This is nowhere close to the hazard of the dusty, flaky asbestos found around old heating apparatus unless you create the dust by cutting or grinding on it. I grew up in a home that had that identical siding on it. The home is about 70 years old now and the siding still looks new. (of course it has been painted a few times) It does break easily. I broke a few out while playing baseball as a kid. Go Cardinals.

Hi to all,
I agree with David, asbestos cement siding seldom presents an enviromental problem until it is being removed from a structure (which is why it is commonly sided over in situe) the fibres are very much more compressed in this application than you nwould see in insulation products and are normally sealed with several coats of paint, there the material is not likely to be come airborn (friable)

I bought my 130 year old home 6 years ago. It has fiber cement shingles that probably contain asbestos. I put vinyl siding right over it without a worry. I probably breath more asbestos coming off the brakes from the vehicles that go by on the 4 lane hwy that is about 50 feet from my house. And for those of you that are about to tell me that brakes don’t contain asbestos any more, click here and here .
