Attic ventilation

here is the situation; I was doing one of the mock inspection at my father inlaws today and noticed there is an ice dam forming on a complete back side of the roof. but no ice dam in the front there is possibly a ventilation problem saying it is.there is a maxi flow installed on the roof and air would circulate through the soffits, originally there are openinings of 12"x12" on the south and north walls just below the peak of the roof should these original opening be closed up to create a chimny effect for ventilation of the attic.

Thanks in advance
Michael Russell

What’s the insulation situation up there?

Pink fiberglass was used, and it didn’ look like any was moved .thé house is 1972 modèl,would thé insulation have settled or naturally compressed?
