Does anyone know the year that baluster spacing changed from 6" to 4"?

It is easier to change direction than it is to forget where one has been.

In 1995 the CABO One & Two family dwelling code required the openings in guard rails (spaces between balusters) to prevent the passage of a sphere 4 inches in diameter. Prior to that it was 6 inches.

Let me guess,The agent says that they are grandfathered, right? icon_rolleyes.gif

That is one of those items like a GFCI that are called out not because of a code violation, but because of a safety hazard.

and prior to 6" it was 9"… And remember its not the date of the code that’s important, its the adopted code in use by the municipal district in

which you are inspecting. For instance, several cities are still using older

UBC model codes and have not yet adopted 2003 IRC Codes for enforcement. icon_idea.gif

It really doesn’t matter what or when it became code, all that matters is that we do our part by informing them of the potential child hazard. Whether they correct it or not is up to the client, at least your off the hook icon_exclaim.gif
