Walk-In closet had a noticeable black stain on the ceiling away from attic opening. When I popped the attic access I found the insulation around the opening was blackened.
Does this look like mold or smoke damage?
Poor gasket is allowing house air leak into the attic .
Stains are a combination of a smoker , cooking fumes and possible no stove ,bath room & dryer ,Vent to the outside .

Attic access is on second floor.
The kitchen is on first floor and other side of house, 1st & 2nd floor bathrooms vent outside, same for dryer.
Maybe current owner is a closet smoker? 
It acts just like a return filter that never gets changed. Dust alone will do it.
