If your asked to inspect a house in a town other than where you live do you check to see if a business license is required?
I never have, we have state licensing in Ohio, and I would think that the state license would over-ride any local licensing requirements, but I’m not certain of that.
No, I have never checked in this unlicensed state nor have I ever had a problem regarding that.
A few years ago, I was to Inspect a new build (new subdivision) in a small town not far from Louisville metro and after a few minutes from pulling up to the home a AHJ walked over and asked me if he could see my business license, which I could not produce and I said I only had my state license and that I didn’t know I needed one. He let me do my inspection but suggested that if I do any more inspections in this town that I had better get my business license.
No. But I do know that some resort communites do require it and the local PD enforece it.
Missouri has no home inspector licensing, but the larger towns typically require a business license. Back in 1994 when I started my only competition turned me in that’s how I found out. A trip to city hall and $35 corrected the situation.

It seems to be the opposite here, most of the smaller towns require one. I think they need/want the revenue!
The only time it ever came up was once when I was doing a job for the city… as in, they were buying the house for whatever reason. Even with that it was pretty much like @ndegaris describes. They told me I really should have one if I’m going to inspect in their city again. Yeah… thanks
Back when I ran a multi-inspector company there were 25 or more cities around our metro area that we were in every year. Talk about a clerical and financial nightmare trying to keep licenses for each.
in wv a business license is required by the state to run a business, go figure. and the state business license and state tax division are two seperate entities that i found out after thinking i was paid up with the state. we are not required to have one for any municipality in the state.
edit: neither of those two divisions take care of contracting licensing though, which requires a third state entity.
