My inspection today - built in 1960, and has been flipped several times. It is actually in really good condition, but saw this in the back yard. Looks like a pipe for an underground oil tank, but I couldn’t find another. I usually find 1 vent and 1 filler. But the PVC cap on it makes me think - hope - it has been decommissioned. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one that was…
Pop the cap and take a sniff… (or drop in a pebble and listen for the splash)
If it were an oil barrel, it would likely be a cast iron pipe. What was the pipe (not the cap) material?
Honestly, it looks like steel pipe-at first, I thought it might be from an old chain-link fence or maybe an old clothes line…, but couldn’t figure the cap and it’s about 30" above grade.. And the cap was on too tight to take off - I tried. The cap looks new.
Do you have many buried oil tanks in Kissimmee, FL? Was there a crawlspace? You will often find old oil components there.
This was in Titusville - a lot of the older homes along the Space Coast had originally oil furnaces. I see probably 5-6 a year. Usually find a filler cap sticking up and the owner has “no idea”. This house has changed hands 4 times in the last year, so nobody has a clue…And no crawl - it’s on slab. I can often find an old flue in the attic- they just leave it when they change the HVAC, but this had a low-slope roof with no room to look.
I’ve recommended A Phase 1 Environmental Site Assessment but it has been on older commercial/residential properties. with those unknown conditions. Referring it out for assessment is important as I see it.
