Chimney mortar cracks

Chimney has several cracks in the upper most section. Large enough to allow rain water to enter, but what about the dangers of allowing gases enter the attic etc if there are cracks within attic area of the chimney?

There are also some bricks with chunks broken out but through to the liner.

Peter,

it certainly sounds like it needs attention at the minimum, also if it is used as a regular chimney flue you should recommend a level II inspection by a licenced sweep.

Here’s some photos of the chimney in question:

This shot shows a furnace and water heater vent attachment to the lower end of the Chimney as seen in the basement. Notice the opening above the vent pipe.

Highly recommend a Mason Contractor and/or chimney sweep to evaluate this expired life of a chimney.

Hey Mark; unless your expert knowledge in waterproofing can fix this scenario, I would expect that everyone stick to the SOP, and in case you do not know what that is, it is the Standard of Practice for Certified Inspectors through NACHI that you are not part of and will excuse your ignorance on this minor detail.

Hope you learn something in your stray to unfamiliar worlds.

I see several things guys…

It looks like two clay flue liners are present. The chimney cap does not extend past the brick edge of the chimney so water rolls down the "edge" and keeps the brick wet during a wet period. Any Chimney covers... doesn't look like.
The crack around the liner / cap looks as if the temperature changes maybe helping this condition. Perhaps some movement with temp changes.. What is the Chimney cap material and quality ? Looks like a lousy mix of material? The cracks in the cap material will let water into the cracks and let freezing aggravate the condition even more.

The flue pipe / smoke pipe pictures scare me.. This huge gap needs to be sealed Period. Looks like Cat 1, natural gas burning, natural draft appliances to me connected to the chimney.
