CO vents in garage

Does anyone know what, if any, requirements there are for the CO vents in a garage. Every house typically has two. I inspected a new house today that only had one. I looked through the IRC and couldn’t find anything on this.

Patrick,

What is a CO vent? I don't think I ever seen one, let alone a requirement for one...or two....or three. ![icon_biggrin.gif](upload://iKNGSw3qcRIEmXySa8gItY6Gczg.gif)

Maybe someone here knows something that I don't. Anyway, ask Jerry P. If there is a requirement for one in the IRC he would know what it is.

I don’t believe that there is any “requirement” for vents in a garage. They are typically provided as vents for vapors of flammable liquids. Without vents, the area is not supposed to be used for storage of flammable liquids.

Around here everyone calls them Carbon Monoxide (CO) vents. There are usually two of them on the outside wall of the garage. One near the front, one near the back of the garage. In older homes, they are usually cut into the bottom panel of the garage door. One on each side.

Every house I've inspected has always had two or none. The new house I inspected yesterday only had one. The house next door to it (which I inspected 2 weeks ago) has two. But it has a larger garage. So I was wondering if it depends on the size of the garage if there are one or two.

When I lived up north, none of the houses had them from what I remember. But, I wasn't specifically looking for them then.

Thanks for the input guys.

Correct.

I haven't found any reference to this in the code either, so, if it is not a local requirement, and the builder or someone wants to 'not have vents to the outdoors' in the garage, make sure that you clearly state in your reports that 'not having vents to the outdoors' in the garage IS UNSAFE AND CAN LEAD TO DEATH, IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME.

You could always add the disclaimer in your report not to close the garage door(s) and leave the car running! icon_biggrin.gif
