My understanding is that a gas fired forced air heating unit, enclosed in a hall closet, that is vented through the attic, has to be fire stopped at the attic floor. Also a return air vent has too be installed from the attic to the enclosed space of the heating unit. This appears to be a contradiction of mechanical requirements. Comments welcomed

I don’t know about Ga. but in my area a one layer sheet rock ceiling does not constitute a fire stop.
If the vent that you are calling a return air vent terminates within the closet; there are suppose to be two vents one high and one low and they are use to provide combustion air for the burner from the attic and are a requirement unless the furnace is grandfathered in.
