Drain on sewer line in crawlspace?

This photo is hard to see, but what it is, is a cast iron drain on the side of the sewer line. I have never seen this before and wonder if anyone else may know why it is there. The crawlspace has a lot of water issues but I think mostly due to a high water table and poor drainage. Their was no sewer smell ether. The drain also has a trap on it.

Never mind, just recommend a plumber to evaluate.

Larry,

Perhaps anticipation of flooding ?

Hard to tell but it looks like the foundation wall in the back ground has a brownish tinge at about the same level as the improvised floor drian.

Just a thought.

Yes you are probably right, the water level has gotten pretty high in crawlspace. There was mud on top of the sewer line. The buyer is going to put a new vapor barrier down, and install a sump.

Larry,

It may also be benefical to put 2 or 3 " of clean 3/8 gravel on top of the barrier.1, to keep the barrier from floating and 2,to keep excess mud out of the sump pump.
