Looking for recommendations on heavier drones to use for roof and property inspections. I’ve been looking at DJI PHANTOM 4. I have a mavic but it’s to light to handle Pennsylvania winter winds for roofs
It’s been a few years since I researched so I’m sure everything has changed but I did notice over the weekend that Costco had a couple. One was $1000 and one was $500. Both looked pretty substantial and, like everything at Costco, are probably a good value.
I use a DJI Mavic 2 Zoom. I’ve had it up in some pretty strong winds. There are times when the wind can make it unstable as winds get turbulent around different roof planes. The zoom lens is a VALUABLE tool that helps you maintain some distance but still see up close. The drone is a great tool for sure. Have fun with the FAA licensing exam if you haven’t already done that. It’s pretty detailed.
What’s your thoughts on the phantom 4?
This guy tests the new Mavic drone in 60kph winds. Thats 37 mph for us 'mericans.
Video is rock solid. Even with zoom, its like the camera is on a tripod.
Do you need a drone to inspect snow and/or ice covering a roof?
Yes, I want to use drone so I don’t have to climb on roofs
If you can walk the roof you should.
I don’t know much about the 4. I just know they have built in technology that keeps you from getting too close to stuff forcing you to have to zoom in on photos to get the detail you may need. They also have built in technology to keep you from flying in controlled airspace, which can get frustrating. I know you can get special permission to fly in some areas…I just don’t know how to do that and to override the technology. I’m pretty sure that was on the test, but don’t remember. So, if any licensed drone pilots have info on that it would be appreciated.
Wow, that’s amazing! Almost makes me want to go buy one… trouble is my video would likely show it going down as ‘lost at sea’
So you are buying one so you don’t have to climb on a snow or ice covered roof to tell the client that you can’t see anything because the roof is snow or ice covered?
