Exterior GFCI Connection

I saw several wall outlets that were connected to a switch that also controlled the interior hall light. What I found to be odd, during the initial inspection, the exterior rear GFCI outlet didn’t work and I wrote it up. Today, I figured out that that same switch inside the home providing power to the interior outlets and hallway light, also controls the outside GFCI outlet. Although this is really strange to me, is this wrong? I know the exterior outlet does not have to be on a dedicated circuit, but the way it’s all wired is strange to me.

I’m guessing that the exterior receptacles are near the interior switched receptacles? They likely added the exterior ones later and it was easiest just to tap into the existing interior receptacles in the vicinity. I’ve seen it a few times. I would just note that the exterior receptacles are switched and let the client decide if they want it changed.

Yep. They are. Thanks for the second opinion.

Not to long ago a switched exterior outlet would prevent someone from drilling your locks. With all the rechargeables that makes little difference today. Give em 5 minutes and they’ll crawl under your car and saw off your cat. A few years back they were sawing down Baltimore’s aluminum lamp poles and selling them for scrap. Thieves are ingenious!

Hahahahahaha. Yea they are. It’s irritating too.

Exterior gfi receptacles can be switch controlled. The issue would be if they were on circuits like from a kitchen, bath or laundry circuit that is prevented from being shared outside those areas.
