Garage door emergency release

A number of homes I have inspected (condos especially) have had detached garages with no means of access other than the main garage door. It has always concerned me that there was no way of opening the door from the outside in case of a power failure (or failure of the opener). I?ve never reported this concern as I didn?t realize that there was indeed a simple solution.

I am currently installing an opener for a neighbor (I?m the block handy guy) and was faced with this situation. A little research turned up the following?

The cable simply attaches to the mechanism release and, voila, access without power. The photo is of a Genie brand keyed emergency release (under $20) but there are others and I see no reason they wouldn?t be interchangeable. I think I will now suggest these as a worthwhile upgrade my clients may want to consider.

I thought that some others here may not know of these and be interested.

A Rescue Saw and a halligan bar work wonders.
