Garage fire door question.

So now that you know, do you try to alert your past clients of the error?

In regards to your question, you’ve already had many people tell you no.

My question to you is … Where did you go to home inspection school before entering this profession? Didn’t they cover this with you?

I haven’t inspected a home with one in place. I mentioned earlier that I special ordered them for people at the Home Depot. This was also upwards to 6 or 8 years ago.

No holes in fire doors.

If this has been discussed, I’m sorry. I’ve looked but did not find it. Now be gentle…If there is NO water heater or furnace or any type of ignition source in the garage, is a fire rated door still required.?

Yes. Still required. A car’s catalytic converter gets extremely hot. As does the exhaust on a lawnmower or weed wacker or the sparks from a grinder.

The door, as well as the threshold and the weatherstripping also keep fumes out of the home.

Yes …was that gentle enough?

I know a door in Canada is not fire rated unless it has a label ( for insurance reasons)
same door less a label 150.00 less back 15 years ago. I wondering if they changed this up there anyone Know?

No- so long as you can’t use it as a garage any more!

(garage conversion to living space)

Actually it has nothing to do with the water heater and heater as both of thoes appliances can be inside the house, right?

It actually has to do with carbeurators!

Yes, you can easily install pet door and for this you need to teach your dog and cat to use the pet door to exit and enter to your home. The pet door should start at least 3 inches above the bottom edge of the door.

Sorry but if you are talking about the door between the garage and home, NO, you cannot install a pet door. It is a breach in the fire door and may very well void your homeowner’s insurance should a fire occur. If it is a door from the garage to the exterior, no problem.

Ah, but they do exist. Here’s a product to retrofit a standard pet door (or mailbox) to restore the fire rating:

Granted, that’s a UK product, but if it’s between fluffy and the building code, fluffy is gonna win 90% of the time.

Until it is approved for use in the US, it means nothing that some product, somewhere else in the world, exists.

The insurance companies will use any pet access in that door as an excuse to not pay out on a policy. I would never recommend something like this to a client.

Agreed! You can’t seal any pet door.

Looks like this discussion was closed in 2012, so this product I’m about to introduce may be new, just would like to hear your thoughts?.. https://firesafepetdoors.com/
they claim they cover all the issues to keep the rating. I am interested in purchasing one, but these are not cheap.
