Garages finished in vinyl?

Opinions on Garages with no drywall/sheetrock, finished in exterior siding and soffit?

It looks like an attached garage so I would recommend drywall on the ceiling and party walls.

If it is indeed an attached garage, and the attic space is open to the area over the living spaces, then proper drywall should be installed as a firewall.

Yes it is attached, under roof/ shared attic space.

Needs to be called out as a safety hazard.

Does a vehicle park under the area pictured? (porch ceilings, soffits, and overhangs do not need the separation.)

Welcome to the InterNACHI forum, Joshua. Pleasure to meet you.’

Not Fire/Fume barrier.
The drywall between a house and garage should be 1/2" inch, fire-resistant.
Garage ceilings with habitable spaces above, 5/8" inch, fire-resistant drywall installed.

IRC R302.6 Dwelling-garage fire separation.

Sorry about the glare. Didn’t review my pic before I left.

That’s hilarious, lol. Yeah, put it in the report if there is no drywall behind it.

Without views of side angles…
Looks to me that the only attachment/shared anything, is the back wall.
No shared attic.
No shared side walls.
The rear wall only is a shared wall, and I bet if you unzipped the vinyl, you would find a firewall behind it.

You are right, hard to tell. The attic pic with the insulation in the background almost makes it look like it is open into the house attic though.

A view of the side elevation should likely answer that question.

One for the WTF thread, really.
I suppose it could make a nice diffused skylight, with openings above.

All good. Images are great. I have also been in the same situation.

Take a look at the attic picture again. There is clearly additional and insulated attic space beyond the vinyl and look at the valley framing in the top right.

I’m curious if that is insulated ducting on the left.

Now orientation of the vinyl, it’s side to side and what appears to be a pull down ladder that would have you be facing to the right side of the garage as you went up into the attic.

That would put you looking into the area above the living space.

I am curious how many tens of dollars the builder saved.

Not only is there no firewall, the vinyl releases toxic fumes when burned, the opposite of a firewall.
