My inspection yesterday threw me. While in the garage I seen that the fire place insert was installed there it was set on a layer of concrete blocks with a row of 2x6s on top that the insert was sitting on there were exhaust holes on each side one that had flex pipe down toward the floor and the other with nothing connected to in there was also boxes and just general garage stuff piled all around this thing. I wrote it up as a safety hazard due to the 2x6s and the vents being open to the garage Did I do right or was this over kill on my part

Tim,

Based on your description, it sounds as though the unit is being used to heat the garage. This can be a serious hazard due to the potential of gasoline vapors (from vehicles or fuel cans) being ignited by the fireplace.

If you did not write it up this way in your report, I suggest you submit a amendment to your report notifying your client of the potential hazard and copy the owner as well.

Regards,

The buy was there and I wrote it up as a safety and recommended that it not be used until it was inspected by a gen cont. or someone in the fireplace field
