"General Roof Inspection" online training video course

Research & Writing Assignment:

Composite shingles are composed of either a cellulose organic mat and asphalt combination with granules facing up towards the outside or a fiberglass mat embedded with asphalt. Recently copper has been added in to give an algae resistance to shingles and enable companies to warranty them. But sometime big companies are greedy, cut costs and don’t use enough copper so their shingles don’t last through their warrantied period.

The mat provides strength to resist tearing and pull- through from the nail heads. Fiberglass shingles are better for warm, humid climates. Volatiles are the compounds that keep shingles waterproof.

So I have been trying to take the roofing inspection test for some time now but I keep getting held up. Now I submitted an essay but did not make a copy for myself. Dumb dumb dumb. Also It is asking me to upload a picture. I am not an inspector and just wish to take this test to further my knowledge. Why is it so difficult just to start a test? What picture do you want me to upload?? Should I take a picture of a shingle for you? I chose the essay about composition of a shingle. How long is it going to take to find out if they received my essay so I don’t have to start all over? This is why I became a contractor. This navigation through the site and trying to do such a simple thing is a total pain in the butt

Why does this say “applicant”?? You have been taking my $50 for the past three four months… what’s the deal

Research & Writing Assignment:

For my essay I viewed some diagrams of head wall flashings. In the area of the country where I live, this flashing is often installed improperly. The most common mistake is made when installing fiber cement siding. Very seldom do I see installation to the manufacturers specifications.

Inspection & Writing Assignment:

The attached photo is of an improperly installed cent stack. The shingles at the lower area are installed over the vent flashing potentially allowing moisture to get beneath the vent flashing and the asphalt shingles. Proper installation would have the vent flashing over the shingles in this area.

Inspection & Writing Assignment:

House inspected was severely neglected for decades. In lieu of a tear off a second layer of shingles was added to keep the roof leaks to a minimum. Total disintegration of fascia wood at the rear of home is shown.

Research & Writing Assignment:

Many roof inspections end with clients wanting to know if they should replace the roof if some shingles were observed to be blown off from a storm. When they some roofers for repair estimates the roofers tell them they can get them a free roof and the insurance will pay for it when the roof needed $250 of repair work. We wonder why insurance is so high these days!

Inspection & Writing Assignment:

This is a shed roof with less than a 4 12 slope so this should have underpayment overlapping each row with about 19 inches showing. This roof is a defect and in my opinion is eventually going to leak and cause water damage. I would recommend having a qualified roofer take a look at this.

Research & Writing Assignment:

I learned about many different styles of roof and that there are actually some roofs that cant be named because of there uniqueness. The most common roof is a gable roof. The higher the slope of the roof the faster it will shed water and be more likely to have less leaks

Research & Writing Assignment:

Flashing are designed to keep water out. They are used where dissimilar materials meet, where a material changes direction, at roof penetrations and at joints in materials. Flashing are often galvanized steel; however, they can also be tin, aluminum, lead or copper. Roofs leak when flashing dont do their job properly and are one of the most common sources of roof leaks.

Inspection & Writing Assignment:

Skylights should be flashed much like chimneys. A skylight should be installed on a curb or box that protrudes above the roof surface (unless the skylight comes with a per-manufactured flashing assembly). This allows for the installation of proper flashing and limits snow accumulation on the skylight in cold climates. Most skylights leak eventually. If you see evidence of patching on the outside, you can assume that the skylight has leaked in the past.

Inspection & Writing Assignment:

For my essay i chose a picture on a gable roof from a home in my neighborhood. Upon examining the roof from afar i did not see any defects that stand out at me immediately or anything out of the ordinary.

Research & Writing Assignment:

This 3 tab asphalt shingle roof was inspected from the top. Findings were moderate granular loss consistent with normal aging, and improper flashing around the chimney. Both the cricket and side step flashing were missing. Kick out flashing was also missing at the bottom of the eaves.

Research & Writing Assignment:

I reviewed the image entitled Chimney Flashing in the Flashing folder of the Roof images. it conveys the importance of installing proper flashing around chimneys, as well as crickets on the upper edge of chimneys over 30 inches wide. Sealant should not be used as a primary form of flashing.

Inspection & Writing Assignment:

Drip edge is an essential component of a roofing system. In this area, they are often ignored or omitted. When installed, the underlayment should generally be installed over the drip edge at the eaves and under the drip edge at the rakes. Consult the underlayment manufacturer’s specifications as they do vary.

Research & Writing Assignment:

Thermostats are devices designed to control the heating and cooling systems in a building so that air temperature remains comfortable. According to InterNACHIs Standards of Practice, inspectors are not required to verify, inspect or determine thermostat calibration, heat anticipation, automatic setbacks, timers, programs or clocks. It is wise, however, for inspectors to understand thermostat operation and solutions to common defects.
