Why is there a distance requirement between ground rods

Minimum of 6’. Spacing them farther apart may improve their efficiency.

Each rod has a sphere of influence that aids in displacement and overlapping influences reduces the effectiveness. Six feet is the code (NEC) minimums but separation of 8’ on an 8’ rod is preferred…just not required.

As for the 6’ history, it was a common communication industry length back many years ago and it stuck.
