About Canada Day
On July 1, 1867, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia were the first colonies to enter into Confederation, creating Canada as one country. The other provinces and territories joined in the years following, with Nunavut being the newest member.
Ontario’s Canada Day celebration at Queen’s Park has been a tradition since 1967.
This year, Ontario and Canada celebrate their 150th anniversaries.
When
Celebrations take place on July 1 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The official opening ceremony and 21-gun salute is at 12 p.m. Family-friendly activities are available all day and musical performances by Ontario talent will extend until 10 p.m. See the program below for more details.

The name “Canada” likely comes from the Huron-Iroquois word “kanata,” meaning “village” or “settlement.” In 1535, two Aboriginal youths told French explorer Jacques Cartier about the route to kanata; they were actually referring to the village of Stadacona, the site of the present-day City of Québec.
