Heater ventilation issues

I would recommeend buying a few carbon monoxide detectors and place one in the vicinty of the unit and others in main living areas and bedrooms.

Thanks for your support! Much appreciated !

moving might not be easy …rents in the bay area are higher than I can afford.

their “2nd professional” came out today…and I left for a few minutes while they were doing their “inspection” . there is so much tension with the landlady when I came back she said "we are replacing that heater since you are “concerned” darn I wish I would have been here listening. she doesn’t like it when I am right about things.

I asked the technician about the vent at the top and said i was concerned that air was not getting out properly and he said “dont worry we shut your heater off”
I mentioned I was worried about my neighbor above me because I think her’s is connected to the same vent.
Heater guy said " we will shut hers off too" landlady said “she isn’t complaining”

heater guy said it’s not code to have two heaters on the same vent. maybe I am wrong. been wrong before.

why does the owner scream at me when I ask questions.?

I mentioned it would be great if they could check the vent on top to make sure nothing is blocking it…since it is a round vent and we only see a crescent moon.

she yelled “thats it I am not spending any more time on this!” heater guy looked puzzled.

I tried to bring up my concern again (my mistake) and she yelled …they are all going to be out of here soon… like in 4 weeks! because of the “new electric pump heater” which will be interesting to see how that works on 110 amp panel i have.

I will probably have to move.

I was lucky to have another technician neighbor to come by and check it out - for free just following the landlady and her guys.

he tested for CO and found a small leak from where the 3" pipe is connected to the wall …curious because the guy on tuesday his detector showed CO leaking from the top of the heater.

2 different types of detectors… two different readings.
my neighbor explained that the reason the vent looks like a “cresent moon” probably because the masonry flue is rectangle and the vent on top of building is about 10" round. we looked from across the street.

landlady sure doesn’t like it when I know more about the building than she does. which is weird because I might have information that could save her money.

I dont do well with people yelling at me when I am just curious and trying to be helpful…

the neighbor guy said the heater isn’t leaking really that bad. and to me and him it seems easier and alot less expensive to have someone cut a 4" hole and use the correct size pipe and install the vent pipe with a 4 " thimble. i could suggest this to her and she will dismiss me. probably a substantial savings esp since they are getting a different heating system

i keep opening cans of worms !

I have a couple CO detectors but they dont seem to be very sensitive.

unfortunately because of my health issues I am pretty sensitive to things. I have read that sensitive people can get ill effects from consistent levels below 70 ppm. seems like the alarms only get triggered if it is 70PPM and above for anywhere from 1 hour to 4 hours. next level up is 100ppm and that gets triggered after a shorter exposure.

is it worth it to get a monitor that will show what the actual levels are ? so I know when to ventilate . if I am correct and the vents on either side of the building are venting 2 heaters each then that is NOT good.

maybe that is what is driving the TVOC levels up when the heaters are on. uugg it’s not easy being a canary in an apartment where no one cares about air quality.

if any one knows of a good sensitive CO monitor let me know … thank you!

I have a wires smoke detector/alarm system in my house but addes the nest protects throughout as an added measure.

Nest Protect - Smart Smoke & CO Alarm - Google Store

Get the model number and look up the installation guide for that unit. You’re smart, you’ll see if the install is basically right or not.

Put the model number in this post and people can help you a bit more.
