In 2017, OSHA reported 87 work-related fatalities from falling off/through a roof. When deciding whether or not to walk a roof, one must consider environmental factors as well as the condition/composition of the roof covering.
High wind, rain, or snow may prevent you from walking the roof. A multi-story, steep pitch roof may not be the best to walk. Additionally, roofing materials such as tile and slate should never be walked. If the roof is deemed safe to walk, roof walking boots or soft soled sneakers should be used to maximize traction.
Alternatives to walking the roof include a visual inspection using binoculars or from a ladder along the roof edge. A telescoping pole with a camera or a drone can also be used.

Ladder Safety:
Inspectors use a lot of tools to assist in the inspection process. One tool, possibly the most dangerous, is the ladder. Ladders come in many different types and lengths. It is important to have knowledge on the types of ladders and their intended use. The knowledge should not only be on the types but also on all the parts. Ladder injuries as well as deaths have increased significantly over the last several years. These injuries and deaths can easily be reduced by knowing the ladder types, uses, and how to maintain them.

This article is about roof sheathing and how to inspect it. Some of the sheathing used to day is osb, plywood, and composite panels which uses combined veneers. Sheathing basically it the foundation for the roof covering. So if visibly available one can read the rated sheathing requirements per the manufacturer for example 24/16 which is the allowable roof span for the sheathing and the second number is the maximum span when the sheathing is used as flooring material. Plywood panels should be laid with grain perpendicular to the rafter boards. Depending where the house is built is also going to be a certain way of fastening the sheathing to the rafters so if the wind speed is greater than 130mph the nails will be attached 6"oc for at least the first 48 inches. So when inspecting a roof these are some of the things one can look for and also when completing a new construction inspection or reroof.
