The following 2 photos (in order) are showing a garage door info sticker and attachment schedule to the dwelling. As you can see the rating marked on the sticker would indicate a “X” to be ticked on the D row of the 1802 report. (Non-Glazed) Finally, the door rails are bracket bolted into 2”x 6”s seven times on either side of the door. (Anchor bolts used to secure the 2” x 6”s to the block wall of the dwelling.

Hi all, For my essay today I found an article regarding H-Clips for Roof Panels. I was surprised to learn that the usage of H-Clips was not part of the Wind Mitigation course today as it is common in Florida for people to think they are required for Wind Mit purposes. In fact, they are not and merely a way to join the panels which in many cases provides builders to use thinner materials and save on cost. However, many AHJ’s in Florida do require the usage of H Clips.


GARAGE DOOR BUCK STRIP ATTACHMENT

This photo shows a garage door frame attached to a 2”x 8” P.T. buck strip that is only fastened to the studs behind it with 8- 8d gun nails. The specs called for ½” lag bolts @ 16” o.c… Thus this attachment will not resist the suction or lateral wind loads in the case of a hurricane force wind. Photo unable to attach

WIND MITIGATION INSPECTION ESSAY
Area Covered: Opening Protection

Five elevation photos were taken of the property due to left elevation not being able to fit in one photo, as a result inspector took 5 total elevation photos. Next, inspector took a photo of every single opening at the property whether glazed or unglazed. During the process inspector observed all openings to be protected with Miami-Dade Product Control Approved panel shutters. However, there were four unprotected glazed openings located on front elevation; one was an unprotected glazed front door and three unprotected glazed windows. Inspector came to the conclusion that on question 7 of the Wind Mitigation form the answer would be labeled “X” (None or some glazed openings).

Inspect the ants:

Carpinter ants are the places where food is found and in the dry or wet wood although they prefer wet wood that can cause a water leak, there they make their nests. The ants are different from the Termites, they are easy to identify as they have their wings are smaller than the front wings, the antennae are curved, the termites have wings of the same size and the antennae are not curved, although both cause damage to the wood, but The termite causes more severe damage.

On a recent wind mitigation inspection I observed this overhead garage door and installation methods. This is not a compliant door with regards to wind mitigation. On the OIR-B1-1802 Uniform Mitigation Verification Inspection Form regarding the protection of openings, this door is an “X” which calls out no windborne debris protection.

The geometry of a roof plays a very important role when it comes to wind resistance. Gable roofs receive up to 40% more uplift pressure than the hip roof. If the gable is not structurally supported in the proper method, the addition uplift created in hurricane force winds, can cause the construction to separate.

How to perform wind mitigation exercise.

I have attached 2 pictures, a garage door and the garage door mounting brackets.
After inspecting the door I determined the door is steel with no windows. The door has Heavy duty cross members and meets wind resistance requirements. The Garage door does not have any proof of meeting large missile requirements and further inspection shows there are only 4 mounting brackets on each side of the door therefore confirming NO large missile rating.

This is a picture of the front elevation of my house. The geometry of this roof would put it into the category of “other” for the roof type on the Florida wind mitigation report. The reason for this is because the gables add up to more than ten percent of the total roof line.

Wind mitigation is essentially a building strategy designed to limit the amount of damage to a structure caused by wind. There are 7 specific focal points to this building strategy. The seven focal points are as follows: Garage Doors, Opening protection, Roof covering, Roof geometry, Deck attachment, Roof to wall attachment, and the secondary water resistance.

I have attached a picture of ny Rental Home’s Garage door… As you can see there is no heavy duty bracing on the door, therefore does not meet approved wind resistance requirements. Nor does it meet HVHZ requirements…

The Research Article I chose was on Wind Mitigation… I felt this appropriate to this course… Knowing what factors are involved in determing the structural safety of a home is vital. Knowing how protecting the home, what to inspect is of significant importance

This is a single car sectional type garage door. This door does not have the proper amount of attachment points to the structure be considered for impact resistant. The garage door has no impact rating and a static pressure rating of +23.2/-26.2 per label found on door. This garage door would be marked “D” on Opening Protection Level Chart.IMG_0104.JPG

Home Inspectors need to take precautions at all times to take caution when dealing with electric service panels. Inspectors should inform clients to never take off the dead front themselves, either an Internachi certified Home Inspector or licensed electricians. If any problems are found that could be dangerous, a licensed electrician should be called.

Justin…what does this have to do with a Wind Mit?

The attached photo shows the rear corner of a home with a built in screened porch and a gable roof. The storm panels on the bay window are partially installed and show the wind debris protection method used for this home. If properly documented, they’ll provide A.1 impact protection for the openings on the house. While the gable won’t help their insurance premiums or wind resistance, the opening protection will offset some of that issue.

The second essay requirement in the Wind MIT course doesn’t seem to specify a subject to use the gallery/library to learn about. He’s just posting a required essay.

In my survey of the inspection library I’ve come across an article on attic stairs that brought up a few points I hadn’t considered.

Attic stairs are frequently installed by homeowners, not professionals and this can prove dangerous if an inspector isn’t careful. Improper installation of those fold down ladders can cause them to fail while being used. If it fails on an inspector, it can cause injury to the inspector or damage to the home. This can be avoided with a quick look at those stairs before the attic inspection begins. If you’ve got an alternative way up the inspection could proceed. If you don’t, this means the roof deck attachment and wall tie downs are unable to be inspected and there’s barely any point in the visit. Either way, at least nobody got hurt.

While Inspecting the home. I found the garage door to have extra bracing but lacked the number of jamb bracket allowable to make this garage door a hurricane rated door and does not meet the requirements for wind mitigation,

Essay for wind mitigation.

Wind mitigations are for your Insurance companies to give discounts to home owners that live in an area of hvhz zones. Several items of the home are checked to make sure they conform with the wind mitigation.
Starting out by taking photos of the home and the house number , Then going around the home while taking photos of the sides and the rear of the home and taking a photo of the swimming pool. while deciding what type of roof you have and checking for gable ends and checking windows for ratings and shutters.
Inside the attic checking for nailing position to rafters and strapping on rafters and how thick the sheathing is.
Also included in this Inspection is the garage door, checking for bracing on the vertical tracks, The windload sticker that should be on the door.
if there are No labeling on the windows, garage doors, hurricane shutters advise with home owner for documentation and check your local building department.
