I called the manufacturer. Here’s the scoop. Black discoloration can be the result of burning candles in the room. The soot from the candle is deposited on the grill and will be very difficult to remove. The manufacturer recommended using Goof Off to remove it. He said that this type of discoloration is not usually an indication that the heater is running too hot. If the powder coating starts to flake off, that is an indication of overheating. Cigarette smoke can also cause a brown discoloration that is difficult to remove.
