I took your comments as what they were meant to be, just an honest concern for your fellow inspectors…no big deal.
Your concerns can also be said for inspectors in general…the majority of the time when an inspector ask a question (even with pictures), there is rarely not enough information provided…I can understand it coming from those non-members who are not inspectors but when inspectors are posting questions and fail to provide enough pictures then that speaks as to their thoroughness and experience.
Every inspection I perform I make sure I take enough exterior pictures from all elevations including those that reflect the grade / slope of the property and where there are issues I take pictures from various angles. In my opinion one can never take enough pictures. Just this year alone I have take over 2 GB worth of pictures just from home inspections.
I don’t know how long you have been doing inspections but I remember when inspection reports were mostly written without pictures…I heard an CE instructor advice to be careful about taking to many pictures because it show things that you miss…I disagree with that philosophy simply because one is already conceding that they are not thorough… because I am thorough I will review every picture I taken before I release my report…this also explains to why I do not release reports
in the field.

Thank you Jeff and to be quite honest The reason I posted here and I post occasionally on another forum is because in many situations you cant get a definitive answer from anyone because its not black and white always. Just take the millions of “ideas” being pushed on people about water infiltration. I spoke with 5 different “experts” on a water infiltration/damp basement and got 5 different approaches.
I want to see what people want to offer and I truley appreciate any info that people share.

You sir make alot of assumptions and judgments about people. I mean does it really make you feel better if I say things like rafters and sheething and roof pitch. I truly don’t appreciate you continued assumption and assertions that I know nothing. never said that I said I have heard bad advice from both. I mean lets be honest for every reputable contractors there are 3 that dont know what they are talking about. Also I find it funny you want to protect people on a message board from general advice but dont see a liability issue with contractors giving face to face advice to people of random skill levels? that is a liability issue. There are some people full of great advice at supply stores but not everyone by a long shot. as I said before I like multiple opinions.

I do ask contractors too but i think you have a distorted view of contractors and store workers.
I am not mad at anyone. If this made me mad I would get much done. Roy asserted that I “used” people to tell me how to wire something. False. I asked a code question because I thought people here would know how it read and interpreted.
The problem I have with roys statement and many of your is this idea that I am somehow stealing or looking for handouts. Again no one needs to answer me if they dont want. This is just another way to share info. You want contractors to give free advice but have issues with someone asking here.
see the big flaw i see in your argument is that you are trying to say your concern is for things being done proper and not overlooked but you are trying to stop a flow of good information simultaneously

I have been inspecting for 4 plus years but stopped last year so I can do it in a organized, structured manner, with methodology for comparison, that I can work with.

I have taken 8 months off and partly closed my exterior facade restoration and repair company.
I want to give myself the time needed to get my structured reporting practices down pat and a viable business platform base, before I approach the real-estate market. .
Today I did 2 inspections today.
Nervous-They where OK and need fine tuning ,but welcome to the world of growing your business.
I tested my strategy and a clients agent applauded a part of my business platform.
Testing the waters is part of many business plan.
I am happy.

How many is to many? The residential building can only answer that question.
I snapped 12 photos of the firebox breast, damper, and smoke chamber. Home ( mansion ) is 1872.
I have a chance to sell ( move in certified ) again.

Now releasing you reports after the inspection?
Releasing your reports in the field shows contempt and lack of responsibility to your business and fellow inspectors " to me "
Shows a rush to finish, review, and clients will get use to an inspection being 2.5 hours long. Like inspection mill.
What would you pay for a 2.5 hour inspection?
Or anything else for that matter.
I would not trust a short inspection knowing what I know.

Loads of stress and can not see straight.
You are a value to any association and my ignorance and shot temper are not needed here, or anywhere else for that mater.
Time to take a break and back into the books.
Your insight into the goings on in the home inspection industry are valued ( to a point )others have opinions too.
I am just mad at learning over the past 9 months how others calming to be truly interested in forming associations only weaken the structure.
You views on issues and mine are not far apart , its the solutions that differ, that’s all.

I have learned that be it message boards or emails, trying to convey messages can be difficult, especially when emotions are involved…add to the fact that some individuals turn into keyboard hero’s, spouting of at the mouth in a manner that they would not if they were standing in front of the person.
I took your message for what it was worth…yet often through misunderstandings if not false assumptions things can get a bit whacked shall we say.
I notice that the original post was from a fellow North Carolinian, so it only made since that I attempt to answer his question, even more so since I am also a licensed contractor (residential and commercial) in the same state.
