The problem is that you can’t see all of the wiring so it can never be known beyond a shadow of a doubt to be “safe” because it is largely concealed in walls, ceilings, and beneath floors. No electrician could say with certainly that the system was absolutely safe.
While yes, technically it is an accepted method, everything deteriorates over time and nothing can be expected to last forever. I refer it whenever I see it to an electrician and privately I tell my clients I would not let my children sleep in a home with knob and tube wiring.

I agree with Joe on what is hidden could be the problem, K&T is outdated and should be explain as such. Problem around here most homes have been flipped and are low income. People go in paint, insulated and walk all around in the attic. Insulation over K&T .Strike one, add circuits without doing it in a proper fashion Likely taped together strike 2. .
Next problem Most electricians are not old enough to evaluated K&T.
Look at this way Model T would not be the best idea to drive down the interstate now days . was great in the day.
More loads, Uneducated People on the system loading it up .
I inform, Note it , and recommend to have a electrician evaluate it. It is up to them to make the final decision

Wasn’t too long ago that I looked at the electrical that a Home Inspector had written up. Although the wiring was old I found little that needed to be addressed on the electrical although there was two pages written up.
What I did notice was the HI hadn’t said a word in their report about 2x6 floor joist that spanned 12 feet nor anything about a 1 ¼ waste line on the washer.
It seems that this HI thought they knew more about the electrical than another trade although at the time the house was built everything including the electrical was code compliant.

Most knob and tube has been modified and a problem is usually evident.
My complaint is with categorically condemning Knob and tube with no evidence of a problem.
True Micheal how ever wiring like people when it gets older just is not the same. ever wonder why you have problems doing something now you didn’t have when you were 17?

(Note: The panel was upgraded to a breaker panel, as opposed to the orig fused panel/blocks)??? Yes I have seen this once or twice. Still a defect in your eyes???

If has been inspected and passed, I still inform if the K&T was still in use, In fact more chances of over loading if it has been upgraded and Modified with additional wire and a new panel .

K&T makes me nervous, it is simple to replace when renovating . Most houses with it probably Balloon construction so why wouldnt you just drop a new wire down the wall?

Knob and tube should make every inspector nervous enough to look very carefully for defects.
The house was gutted, and the entire home rewired (not upgraded or modified) with NEW K&T. Not a trace of old wiring was left in place. There were no modifications or add-ons. The only thing reused was the actual Knobs and Tubes.
