Boy does that picture bring back bad memories! One of the very first I did was an old lady who used the dishwasher for storage only it was personal items such as ceramic figures, photo albums, you name it. Caught it before they got to wet though.

I’ve seen the same type of thing in ovens.
Look first, and look good.
I've always looked. I thought I always 'looked good' too, but one day ,many years ago, in a condo from an estate, I checked and the oven was empty, turned the oven bake element on and it was okay, turned broil element on and soon smoke started pouring out of the oven.
Turn everything off, open door to see what the heck is going on, and there, on TOP of the broil element, was a wood cutting board.

Jeff where is the picture of the melted plastic? I think it takes burning at least 1 in a oven and you never forget to look .
That's actually how I learned. The lady used the oven to store her bread

Rolland,
You mentioned melted plastic and I started laughing.
That reminds me of one time when I was testing a stove. I turned on the electric oven, tested the top burners and at the same time got distracted with a question from my client. I then forgot to check the oven.
Minutes later, black smoke started pouring out of the oven. I ran over and quickly opened the door and all I could see was a blue plastic strainer dripping and melting right through the racks and oozing to the bottom of the oven.
What a damn mess. Thank god the Realtor was nice about it. She went and scraped all the plastic off from the racks and cleaned the oven up for me. But the house still reeked when I left. I learned to always stay right there with the oven door wide open until tested.

I did one Saturday with a double oven. The bottom oven was in the same condition as your dishwasher, full of cabinet items, paper plates, napkins, canned goods, etc.

Of Course…
Beware of brand new stoves, as well. Packing cardboard, plastic and the instructions package all react poorly when the heating element is turned to the “on” position.
