Man dies from radon article?!?? Well, I’m sure as hell not reading that article!!

Looked tried to find the articale gave up moved on .

From the article…

“According to EPA estimates, radon is the No. 1 cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. Radon is believed to be responsible for about 21,000 lung cancer deaths every year, with 2,900 of those deaths among people who have never smoked.”

I found it by typing “radon” into the search field of the main page… then I had to disable my pop-up blocker to view.

“The cancer was puzzling. Her husband had never smoked. He owned Consolidated Hardwoods in Broomfield, but Stewart was able to find no research linking sawdust and lung cancer.”

She, evidently didn’t look to hard:

Smoking is only one, small, cause.

Guess she doesn’t know how to use the web.

Guess she also wants to cash in.

But, let’s not disagree with the politcally correct.

Heaven forbid.

I wonder how many No.1 causes we have; second hand smoke, coal dust, saw Dusts, now radon. :???:

Darn!

I sure pick the wrong week to give up sniffing glue, didn’t I.

Thats the greatest movie line!

Nick has taken out an insurence policy on all of us do not read it.

This is from the first couple of paragraphs of the article.

That was my first reaction, too, Joe.
Scary thought . . .

Hi Gents-

The article merely represents the problems associated with the press. It is virtually … no, it is COMPLETELY physically and entirely scientifically IMPOSSIBLE for someone to determine that the cause of a particular cancer is from radon (or pretty much anything else for that matter).

Rather, as a toxicologist performing retrospective risk analyses, what we do is apportion risk, recognizing that the models are ALL wrong – but occasionally useful.

However, if you are a bored journalist looking for a ripping good yarn, you can throw out all of the science and not permit facts to interfere with an otherwise good horror story (Journalism 101).

In truth, the cancer could have been idiopathic, epigenetic, or even caused by a single molecule of benzene inhaled by the man back in 1962 as he stood by his dad filling the lawn mower. It could have been due to hundreds of different causes.

Risk is a question of probabilities. It is entirely IMPOSSIBLE to conclude with confidence that it was radon. Remember, the courts don’t decide on facts, they merely use some facts, and emotion, and perceived economic factors, and, of course, drama.
