Obama Plan to Weatherize Buidings & Create Jobs

Peter - you are correct again! An energy audit that does not include HVAC testing, CAZ testing and true air leakage testing is a sham. Many of my energy audit findings lead right back to the HVAC system(s).

I rest my case. You do low level energy audits… you bad boy.

Our energy audit class is a brief introduction class. Many energy auditors
with more titles than you have told us in class how they will no longer
use a blower door. Some say they like it. We discuss both sides.

Some have even said the blower door testing in a house has made
some of their clients and themselves sick from mold spores.

I know of many energy auditors with more titles than you that have
said they went back to doing low level energy audits. It makes them
more money and there is more demand. As long as they meet the
needs of their client and do not violate any laws, then I will allow them
to do so. No houses have blow up yet

I know of power companies in Texas that use federal funds to
weatherize and service about a half a dozen main points in a
house. That is all. Their people have some of the longest pedigrees
of titles and certifications I have ever seen. But this is how they
do it with Federal Money. They concentrate on only about a half
a dozen main points. How do they get by with that without asking
your permission?

I built my first house with my own hands in 70’s and have been in
various fields of construction, inspecting and teaching ever since. Our
class is an introduction level overview… please stop comparing it to
your certifications and pointing out it is not the same. We all know that
and that you are proud of your titles.

Every energy class after mine is better!!! My class is only an introduction.
We tell people this at every class!!! We are teaching kindergarten
for those who want to start learning about this field.

We also allow people of experience to share their feed back and not
everyone agrees with you. It is my class and I enjoy hearing both sides.

There is NO national (federal) standard for an energy audit
that applies to all 50 states. Please quote that law for us.
Not everyone wants a an energy rating. That is OK too.
Low level evaulations are not illegal.

There are local laws in some areas, for certain kinds.
There are federal laws regarding certain kinds as well.
There is NO national (federal) standard for all types of
energy audits in all 50 states.

If there is, I know of hundreds of low level energy audits
going on by RESNET energy auditors, and others, who will
disagree with you. Even you have done low level evaluations.
You just call it something else.

If this discussion boils down to a matter of semantics, of what
you can legally call something, then please show me that law too.

Is it illegal to teach an introduction class now? We discuss various
points of view. Many people, with more certificates than you, do
not agree with you. It’s my class and I allow that. Is this illegal?

Many times I find all kinds of energy deficiencies in homes that have
gone through all the testing’s you mentioned. Are they now a sham?

I give energy advise with every inspection I do. I use common
sense and an IR camera. So even the present energy star audits
have some major holes in them…IMHO.

Some of the recommendations that these guys make are very
stupid as well. Some are not.

BTW… I know of a lot of problems that are created in houses that are
made air tight to the point that is affects peoples health. The CAZ issue
(combustible appliance zone), just adds to the potential problem.
Good point.

Here is my take on common sense and the real world…

Most people want to know the “sweet spot” of where they can spend
the least amount of dollars to get the fastest return on their utility bills.
Many of these people want simple solutions for now and may spend
more later. There is a market for these people and their level of need
is legal to serve.

Yes, there is much higher levels of energy audits, but they have a right
to choose what they want. Many a certified energy auditors has missed
this need by a mile, to the harm of the clients… IMHO. I hear their
stories all the time.

I bet (I may be wrong) this is what the Obama energy team is discussing
behind the scenes right now… To give the highest level of energy audit
and recommendations VS simple solutions that will meet the needs of
most homes for the maximum return on the dollar spent.

The illusive “sweet spot” for most people.

John,

Anyone with a “4SarahPalin.org” link in their signature has got to have some balls!! You always stick to your guns, I will concede that.

All joking aside, you still have not answered my questions. Also, when is your next Webinar? I would like to sit in on it. I have an open mind

Thanks, Marcel!

I have an Inspection scheduled today at 2:00 pm, so I will have to catch the next one.

Kevin

I just got a call to do and infrared scan on an 8 condo building on the north side of Chicago. The condo association is not looking for a full blown audit, just an IR inspection to determine where their building needs attention. Will Decker got the referral since he’s our Chicago IR guy.

And last night you were just playing with it :stuck_out_tongue:

Check back with me after the holiday Peter. I will ask every proffesional I come in contact with what they know about “CAZ”. I service equipment in hospitals, schools, malls and small commercial buildings.
I’ve never heard of it. I’ve been around quite a while. We’ll see how relevant “CAZ” is.

No, I’ve been doing IR for a few years now, took the building science thermographer certification course through ITC. Tell me C.Scott, what specialized training do I need and where can I get one of those fancy CPI designations to put behind my name? How many inspections do I have to complete or what is actually required to get a CPI designation?

Here is a document from the US Department of Energy. For those un-aware of it, Energy Star is a joint effort between the US Department of Energy (DOE) and The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

In this document (page 7) it references Resnet as a performance standard, and BPI and Resnet as the standards for performance audits (energy audit).

There is room in the industry for other standards, which their currently are. The only issue I can see is that some of these other companies with other standards have been around for ahwile, and yet BPI and Resnet are usually considered the standard in federal, state and local governments. So yes John is correct that there is no “law” per-say, but there are 20 or so other companies with their own standards, or versions of how to conduct a HERS audit. Currently BPI and Resnet have a death grip on who is the standard.

Nice

There is no law that says you cannot advise someone on how
to lower their utility bill. If you do it right, the market is wide
open and people are looking for somone who can hit that
“sweet spot” on how to save money, without spending a ton.

You can have it too!

Gee, with all these designations like naCHI, CMI, CPI, MI, SSI, SSI, PPI… I’ll have to move to a different State.:wink:

Where’s yours Rick. I’ve only seen 1 person here using it and he hasn’t even done his first home inspection.:p:p
