Payne Gas Hot Air Furnace (1999)

Furnace is short cycling with both the burner and fan coming on for a few minutes at a time. Several Contractors have been out to look at it with various suggestions.

- Ductwork on the supply is undersized and needs replacement.
- Insufficient return air provisions requiring additional ductwork
- Poor placement of the thermostat above a return duct recommending relocation.
- Internal thermostat problem on the Unit.
- Just replace it with a Better Model.

Any suggestions?

Joe,

This seems too simple, but how about a bird nest in the exhaust stack.

Alan,

That was going to be my suggestion... to check for an obstruction in the flue.

If the supply duct were grossly undersized the furnace would go out in high limit because the heat couldn't get out fast enough, if this is the case you would have to reset it each time.

Too small of a return will do the same thing.

If the unit has air conditioning the evaporator coil would probably freeze up if the duct work were too small.

The thermostat should be near the return grill to better sense the room temp.

**The anticipator on the wall thermostat must be set to match the gas valve, if not it can cause short cycling.

**If the burner comes on for a while and then the blower comes on and short cycles look for the fan control switch.

**If the burner and the blower come on at the same time the unit may have a fan control board which needs replacing.

The furnace is only 5 years old I'd look for the obvious before changing the ductwork or the furnace.

Hope this helps

Payne is made by Carrier. There is very little difference with exception of name plate on the side. I can believe at least one guy says to replace it. They make their big bucks off replacing systems. I agree with Reggie. Sounds like a thermostat or electrical problem. Eighty percent of the time with HVAC problems it proves to be electrical. I wish I had a dime for everytime I have heard of someone being sold new equipment when nothing was wrong with the old. Just had a case where an older couple had a 5 year Carrier system removed and replaced with a new Janitrol because the HVAC people told them it was worn out.
