Questions of the week 12/04/16

You had it right.
It’s a j-box period and it is above a recessed light.
As Paul wrote the recessed light fixture can be removed, therefore it is accessible.
Now is it ideal?

See, that’s the thing that threw me off. He didn’t specifically say the recessed light can be removed in the question. I don’t know many can lights that can be removed unless they are remodel type can lights.

Yep!

Well, in defense of my question and and as someone said “what you call the box defines it”, right?

Junction boxes come in a couple dozen configurations a few are made to hang lights. In that regard a junction box can feed power to multiple lights and switches which in turn means any box used for this purpose is a junction box as well as a fixture holding box.

I won’t say I don’t make mistakes now and then but I do research before setting the questions and when I have pictures from electrical supply companies to back my question I feel pretty sure I can pose the question as asked.

Thanks Paul for making us think and learn.

I think I learned to be even more careful with the questions.

Naw! Tell me it ain’t true…LOL!

With your guidance Mr Lewis

I knew you were gonna get flack over a few of those questions…
I still haven’t figure the one out about the junction box.

“A junction box is facing down and installed in a joist bay above a recessed light. Is the J box considered accessible?”

Was the question about this?
(I can’t insert an image here from my PC…wonder why?)

Recessed into a J- box.
There are other types also.

Are you referring to the lights j box?

That looks like a LED conversion kit. They are installed inside the existing recessed can.

I guess there is nothing in the NEC that prohibits a J-box above a recessed light (separate from the light connection box itself). Just not a good idea.

Yeah, LED conversion can go right into a J-box.

There are other examples also.
